April Sunshine and Clear Skies

Donated my glasses.

Like many people who got glasses in childhood, I remember that first day of galloping around the house, shouting “I can see everything now!” I know it’s a common memory among specs-wearing kids—along with squinting, inching closer to the blackboard, using one eye, and pretending to be totally fine with sitting out all ball sports. You don’t know how flawed your micro-hacks are until the day those glasses arrive.

A couple of weeks ago, after obsessing, perseverating, and rescheduling, I got Lasik surgery. Immediately after this anticlimactic procedure, I remembered that old joy of seeing clearly through my first pair of glasses—green plastic frames, embossed corner image of Kermit T. Frog … the height of second-grade chic. Walking my dog, I felt that same unexpected euphoria of taking in the crisp edges of every leaf and blade of grass. In my middle-of-the-night moments, my eyes open into a different darkness. After a lifetime of blur, familiar objects now delineate with precision. Ah…that thing lurking in the corner is not a dangerous goblin, just a stack of folded laundry! Life rarely hands out a Benjamin Button moment—especially now when my idea of exercise involves more stretching than sweating… still, I love this bizarre, joyful feeling that my eyes have aged backward.

Also noteworthy in this month of revision, The Favor got a gorgeous new look for paperback. I love how the cover captures the essence of the story—the friendship dynamic between Evelyn and Nora, the vintage vibes, the pregnancy, the cityscape! I can’t imagine a more striking way to rejuvenate this novel—out May 14, and available at Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, or your favorite independent bookstore.

We’re honing in on the launch of the SO MOM podcast (read more about it here).

As ever, we spring into Sunshine with some birthday cake and this bookstack.
